“A Christmas Gift”: Sherman Captures Savannah (1864)

On December 22, 1864, Union General William Tecumseh Sherman sent a now-famous telegram to President Abraham Lincoln: Savannah, Georgia, had fallen. Sherman offered the city as a “Christmas gift,” along with 150 heavy guns and thousands of bales of cotton. The message marked the successful conclusion of his devastating March to the Sea.

Sherman’s campaign cut a destructive path through Georgia, targeting infrastructure and supplies rather than armies alone. It demonstrated that the Confederacy could no longer defend its territory — or its civilian economy. Savannah’s capture came without a major battle, but its psychological impact was immense.
