Chasing the White Whale: “Moby-Dick” is Published (1851)
On November 14, 1851, Herman Melville’s sprawling whaling epic Moby-Dick; or, The Whale was published in the United States by Harper & Brothers. The novel followed the obsessed Captain Ahab and his doomed pursuit of the great white whale, Moby Dick, a story that mixed sea adventure, philosophy, and dark humor in a way readers weren’t quite ready for.
The book flopped at first. Reviews were mixed, sales were disappointing, and Melville’s literary star dimmed for decades. Only in the 20th century did critics resurrect the novel as one of the great works of American literature, a dense, strange, and unforgettable meditation on fate, faith, and obsession.
