A Holiday Classic Is Born (and Ignored) 1892

On December 18, 1892, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s ballet The Nutcracker premiered at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg. Today it’s inseparable from the holiday season, but at the time, critics were unimpressed, and the ballet quickly faded from regular performance.

It wasn’t until the mid-20th century, especially through American productions, that The Nutcracker found its audience, transforming into the cultural and economic backbone of ballet companies across the United States.
