On December 30, 1922, representatives from four socialist republics formally created the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. The new state unified Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, and the Transcaucasian federation, transforming the aftermath of revolution and civil war into a centralized political power that would shape global history for nearly 70 years.
