How Would You Rank History’s Most Despised Cowards?

“Only their actions.” According to legendary boxing trainer Cus D’Amato, actions are all that separate a hero and a coward.

Both feel fear. One acts despite the fear. One fails to act.

Was that the case with the 10 men branded as cowards in this story?

Hard to say. History’s blurry. William Hull was court-martialed for cowardice. But may’ve surrendered to save his men.

Lloyd Fredendall’s story is clearer. This general even tried to blame others for his lack of courage when the chips were down.

  • The sea captain who was branded “Captain Coward” in 2012.

  • The only U.S. WWII soldier who got capital punishment for desertion.
