Twelve Seconds That Lifted Humanity (1903)

On a cold, windy morning at Kill Devil Hills near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, Wilbur and Orville Wright achieved something many believed impossible. Their fragile aircraft, the Wright Flyer, lifted off the ground under its own power, sustained controlled flight, and landed safely. The first flight lasted just 12 seconds and covered 120 feet, but it changed the world forever.

The brothers didn’t just build an airplane, they solved the problem of control. By mastering balance and steering before focusing on power, they created a system that could actually be flown. Four flights took place that day, the longest lasting 59 seconds. Within a generation, humans would cross oceans and continents by air.
