“Hands Off the Hemisphere” — The Monroe Doctrine (1823)

On December 2, 1823, President James Monroe delivered a message to Congress that became known as the Monroe Doctrine. In plain terms, it warned European powers not to colonize or interfere in the Americas, and promised that the United States would stay out of Europe’s internal wars in return.

It was a young nation drawing a bold boundary line. Over time, the doctrine shaped U.S. foreign policy for generations, sometimes as a shield, sometimes as a sword, but always with the same idea: the Western Hemisphere was a different kind of political neighborhood now.
