The Day the Holland Tunnel Opens (1927)

In a first for American motorists, the Holland Tunnel opened to traffic at 12:01 a.m. on November 13, 1927, linking lower Manhattan and Jersey City beneath the river. It quickly became an engineering icon for its innovative forced-ventilation system and record traffic on opening day.
