America Meets the Flying Fortress, First Flight of the B-17 (1935)
On November 24, 1935, Boeing’s B-17 Flying Fortress made its first flight from Seattle’s Boeing Field. The four-engine heavy bomber would go on to become one of the most famous American aircraft of World War II, renowned for its durability, long range, and ability to return home even after taking extensive damage.
Engineered during the interwar boom in aviation, the prototype Model 299 stunned observers with its speed, payload capacity, and defensive capabilities. Though early test flights included setbacks, the B-17 ultimately became a cornerstone of the U.S. Army Air Forces’ daylight bombing campaign in Europe.
