George Ferris, The Man Who Invented the Ferris Wheel (Born 1859)
On November 21, 1859, George Washington Gale Ferris Jr. was born, the engineer who would create the massive rotating structure that stunned visitors at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. His Ferris Wheel rose 264 feet into the air and became the fair’s defining attraction.
Designed to rival the Eiffel Tower, Ferris’s creation required groundbreaking steel engineering and immense passenger cars that each held up to 60 people. The wheel revolutionized amusement rides for generations to come.
