Evacuation Day: The British Leave New York (1783)

On November 25, 1783, seven years after New York City fell under British occupation, the last British troops finally withdrew. General George Washington rode into Manhattan that same day, marking the true end of enemy control in the former colonies.

For decades, New Yorkers celebrated this anniversary as Evacuation Day, with parades, bonfires, and patriotic speeches. In a way, it was the city's original Independence Day, only with the added thrill of watching the departing ships vanish down the harbor.
