The Firestorm Over Dresden (1945)
On February 13, 1945, Allied forces began a massive bombing campaign against the German city of Dresden. Over several days, waves of aircraft dropped high explosives and incendiaries, creating a firestorm that devastated the historic city center and killed tens of thousands.
The bombing came in the final months of World War II in Europe. Supporters argued it disrupted German logistics and hastened the war’s end. Critics questioned its necessity and the scale of civilian destruction. Even decades later, Dresden remains one of the most debated actions of the Allied air campaign.
History often measures wars in victories and surrenders, but days like February 13 remind us that behind strategy are cities, civilians, and lives forever altered. Dresden’s rebuilt skyline stands as both memory and warning.
