The Grand Canyon Becomes a National Park
On February 26, 1919, a vast chasm of stone and shadow officially became the Grand Canyon National Park. Though the Colorado River had been carving its cathedral of rock for millions of years, it was on this winter day that the United States set it aside for preservation, declaring the mile-deep gorge a treasure not to be claimed, but to be kept.
President Woodrow Wilson signed the act establishing the park, ensuring that the canyon’s sweeping vistas, layered red walls, and thunderous river would remain protected for generations. Visitors who first arrived by rail in the early 20th century described the scene as overwhelming, an expanse so immense it seemed less like scenery and more like revelation.
