The First Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade Marches Out (1924)

On Thanksgiving morning, November 27, 1924, Macy’s employees stepped into the chilly New York streets for what they called the “Macy’s Christmas Parade.” It featured marching bands, clowns, and even live animals borrowed from the Central Park Zoo, and it kicked off a tradition that would become America’s most-watched holiday parade.

What started as a celebration to open the holiday shopping season grew into a national ritual: balloons, Broadway, big-city sparkle, and a final wave from Santa to officially start the countdown to December.
