The Photograph That Defined a War (1945)

On February 19, 1945, U.S. Marines landed on the island of Iwo Jima, beginning one of the fiercest battles of World War II. Over the next 36 days, fighting raged across volcanic sand and fortified ridges. The battle would become immortalized by a single image: six Marines raising the American flag atop Mount Suribachi.

The island was strategically important as a base for U.S. bombers and fighters operating in the Pacific. But the cost was staggering. Nearly 7,000 Americans were killed, and Japanese forces fought almost to the last man. The photograph by Joe Rosenthal became a symbol of sacrifice and determination far beyond the battlefield.

February 19 reminds us that history sometimes crystallizes into a single frame—one that carries the weight of thousands of untold stories behind it.
