The Poem That Shaped Santa Claus (1823)
On December 1823, the poem we now know as ’Twas the Night Before Christmas appeared anonymously in a New York newspaper. Officially titled A Visit from St. Nicholas, it quietly transformed Santa Claus, giving him reindeer, a sleigh, and a jolly personality that still define the character today.
