“Four Score and Seven…” — Lincoln Delivers the Gettysburg Address (1863)

On November 19, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln delivered one of the most famous speeches in American history: the Gettysburg Address. Spoken at the dedication of the Soldiers’ National Cemetery in Pennsylvania, just months after the brutal Battle of Gettysburg, Lincoln’s 271-word address reframed the Civil War as a fight for the enduring principle of human equality.

Though he spoke for only about two minutes, the speech became an essential part of American identity, echoing the Declaration of Independence and redefining the nation’s purpose as a place where “government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”
