When the Empire Struck Gold: The Debut of “The Little Mermaid”(1989)

On November 17, 1989, Disney released The Little Mermaid, a film that launched what would become the Disney Renaissance. With hand-painted animation, Broadway-style songs by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, and a return to fairy-tale storytelling, Ariel’s story revived Disney’s creative momentum and refocused the studio’s future.

The film’s success led to a decade of hits including Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Lion King, proving that classic animation still had enormous cultural and commercial power.
